About the Position 
This position is part of the Global Materials Technology department and supports both Goodyear Tire & Rubber compound development through material science investigations as well as polymer development in tire and non-tire applications as part of Goodyear Chemical Operations. The Polymer Science and Technology group is responsible for developing structure property relationships associated with tire materials and developing new materials technology to provide Goodyear with an advantaged competitive position.  The position is also responsible for advancing polymer technologies in tire and non-tire segments thereby supporting the performance goals of compound development as well as the financial targets of Chemical Operations.  The Polymer Science and Technology group works closely with different groups in the function responsible for chemical and physical testing, product development, and some particularly with Polymer Process Engineering and Scale-Up.  The Chief Engineer position is responsible for leading scientists, engineers, and technicians located at both Goodyear Research and the Archwood polymer facilities.  The main responsibilities include resource management and technical guidance to assure timely and highly valued results.     

Primary Responsibilities
The major responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Adhere globally to estimated completion dates for submitted requests (will involve the application of Lean principles)
  • Operate as an interface with different functions to understand the nature of requests, to establish priorities, and to deliver results on time  
  • Report to senior management as necessary regarding the progress and outcome of work requests.
  • Serve as a technical resource for associates in the group
  • Guide associates in the proper description of analysis work and document observations in clear and concise notes and formal reports.
  • Maintain close communications with various company functions such as QTECH, Global Materials, and the specific tire market segments. 
  • Presenting project updates to senior leadership and customers.


Required Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry, Polymer Sciences, or similar.
    • Master’s or PhD desired. 
  • Required: 8+ years technical product development or material development.
  • Preferred; Successfully demonstrated a minimum of 5+ years of technical coaching and mentorship, Project management experience with both internal and external contributions (2+ years), External collaboration and contract/agreement management, International experience, Experience in two of the following; Product development, Product Evaluation, Quality, Manufacturing, Global Engineering, Technology development.


Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with the polymer synthesis approaches employed at Goodyear
  • Experience with the material science of rubber materials.
  • Experience with rubber compound physical testing and characterization
  • Experience with polymer characterization methodologies.
  • Good understanding of tire design, testing and manufacturing process is a plus.
  • Experience in leading teams is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of statistics preferred.
  • Effective communications skills.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Time management skills.
