Reporting to the Associate General Counsel, Intellectual Property Law, the Legal Counsel, Intellectual Property will provide legal support and advice on Intellectual Property (IP)-related matters (including patents, trade secrets, agreements and general IP counseling).


Specific duties and responsibilities of the Legal Counsel, IP will include, but not be limited to the following:


  • Draft/Prosecute patent applications (utility/design patents) world-wide (including the United States [U.S.])
  • Conduct/Prepare freedom-to-practice analyses and opinions regarding third party IP rights. Support IP litigation/disputes.
  • Draft/Negotiate IP agreements (including non-disclosure, joint development, technical services and technology licensing agreements). Collaborate with commercial legal counsel on IP provisions for commercial/other agreements.
  • Serve as primary IP point-of-contact for designated technology/business units. Develop and advise on IP strategies and risk mitigation. Provide day-to-day IP advice/support.
  • Provide training to company employees on IP-related legal/contractual issues.


Professional Experience and Competencies:


  • 3 or more years of experience in an Intellectual Property practice (patent preparation/prosecution, non-infringement, invalidity, freedom-to-operate opinions)
  • Admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
  • Member in good standing with a State Bar
  • Experience negotiating and/or strong degree of familiarity with IP contracts
  • Self-directed professional with ability to prioritize and manage complex workload
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and negotiation skills, with ability to balance risk and opportunity and provide solutions
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to establish trusted partnerships with technology and business line management
  • Agile and quick learner with curiosity and enthusiasm for learning and driving innovation




  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in Mechanical field
  • Experience in automotive industry - Desired
  • Experience in patent litigation - Desired
