About the Position

Global Engineering has the responsibility to invent, design, specify and deliver product and process technologies to make Goodyear’s Business Strategies achievable. This department engineers and integrates new commercial technologies and custom designs to support new products and increased manufacturing capability. It also provides direct and timely support to plant production, engineering, maintenance and energy conservation. Automated Material Handling & Logistics is responsible for the equipment involved in the automated movement of materials and tires in the tire plants.


The successful candidate will primarily be responsible to provide team leadership, project leadership, and individual contribution to explore new automation methods, assist in the development of detailed plans and solutions for processes and equipment in Goodyear’s manufacturing facilities, and improve existing processes through sound engineering principles and strong research capability. The candidate will provide daily leadership based on project management principles and expand department capabilities by mentoring and teaching other engineers. Automated Material Handling & Logistics includes, but are not limited to, conveyor systems,  green tire spray machines, automated delivery systems for tires, automated guided vehicles for tire and material transportation, automated storage and retrieval systems, robots and robotic cells and other related material handling equipment. This position will be primarily focused on automated delivery systems for tires, automated guided vehicles for tire and material transportation, and automated storage and retrieval systems.


This individual will work with other mechanical, mechatronic, civil and electrical engineers, as well as engineering contractors and suppliers. The individual will also work closely with Corporate Plant Planning, Regional Manufacturing, Regional Quality, and/or the Plant Engineers during project scope development phases. The individual will lead some projects that span multiple teams and will participate on other cross-functional teams to support projects. The primary focus of this role will be working with Automation Systems but may include other equipment.


This position includes the requirement to travel to locations throughout the world to support projects. Due to the nature of project support, domestic and international travel is expected to be up to 25% per year and occasional off-hours work is required.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain technical expertise in Automation Systems
  • Manage team information
  • Lead the development of new technology
  • Lead the technology transfer from innovation to industrialization
  • Mentor and teach other engineers as they grow in similar roles  
  • Project management and technology integration across process teams including scope / specification, layout, development, risk management, estimation, financial forecasting, procurement, validation, installation, commissioning, and industrialization
  • Supplier development, management, and compliance
  • Lead process optimization, improvements, and upgrades
  • Travel to manufacturing locations to install and commission equipment; travel to vendors for design reviews and acceptance testing of equipment.
  • Troubleshooting and resolution of equipment performance issues                                                                


Required Education and Experience

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, or Engineering
    • MS, PhD in related engineering field, desired
    • PE, PMP or similar engineering / project management certification, desired
  • 7+ years of engineering experience
    • Tire or Manufacturing experience, desired
  • Working knowledge of 2D CAD
  • Experience working with vendors, including specification, validation, installation, and commissioning of equipment
  • Recognized leader in organization - able to set vision, goals, strategy, roles, process

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and technical documentation skills required
  • Experience with 3D CAD
