The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company maintains an in-house research effort in the areas of tire material innovation and second source approvals.  Global Material Development within Goodyear is responsible for identifying, exploring & developing new material technologies for all of Goodyear’s product lines. The team is also responsible technical approvals of alternate sources of established materials utilizing standard processes and tools. Projects are conducted on a global basis & activities are coordinated through an international technical organization.The Akron based team currently seeks a highly motivated and hands-on Post Doctorate Materials Scientist or Chemist to identify, develop, and qualify new material technologies that address current and future business needs. In addition, the associate will also be responsible for development, qualification, and maintenance of materials currently used in Goodyear products. The successful candidate will be high energy and naturally inquisitive. The Post Doctorate Scientist will be part of a team of material scientist, engineers, and chemists. Domestic and international travel may be sometimes required.

 

Job Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science or Chemistry (or expect the degree within 6 months)
  • Must have in-depth theoretical knowledge and practical experience with analytical techniques used in material science.
  • Strong background in material science or synthetic chemistry and/or polymers, polymer composites.
  • Experience in understanding structure/property relationships in materials is preferred.
  • Have knowledge of tire-related raw materials (polymers / filler / chemicals / fabrics / steel) and their characterization techniques.
  • Understanding & interpretation of rubber composite design/testing is preferred.
  • Previous work experience in tire compound or steel / fabric reinforced composites or related field is preferred.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse group of associates including scientists, engineers, and technicians.
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills required.
  • Works well in team environment.
  • Must be self-starting and self-motivated.

 

 

Responsibilities of the Post-Doc Scientist:

  • Responsible for new material / technology development in support of technology programs to improve tire performance, manufacturing, and cost according to business defined goals and long-term strategy.
  • Translation of tire product performance requirements, such as: rolling resistance, handling, durability, ride comfort & acoustics, into specific material characteristics.
  • Responsible for material selection, design of new lab composite test(s) & the development of the understanding of thermal/mechanical composite behavior for the purpose of addressing current & future tire material needs.
  • Responsible for technical approvals of alternate sources for established tire materials utilizing standard processes and tools.
  • Develop & lead external collaborations in support of project objectives where appropriate.
  • Provide support to internal departments including procurement, tire engineering, Quality, and Goodyear Tire plants. Provide on-site assistance during plant trials as required. Technical assessment of suppliers, and tire product line support relative to tire materials may be required.
  • Applies and interprets standard scientific theories, concepts, and techniques.
  • Compiles data for the preparation of reports and presentations.
  • Completes assignments in a timely manner under the supervision of a senior scientist.

• This position is not permanent. It is for a fixed duration of two years with the possibility for you to apply for full time position after your fellowship is complete, subject to your performance and business need.
