About the Position

You will have the opportunity to join the Tire & Performance Science department, in the Tire Vehicle Mechanics – Life Cycle Mechanics team, to support tire development and vehicle manufacturers through tire mechanics modeling, testing, and investigations

 

Primary Responsibilities

 

  • Support Technology Development programs through development of new tire/vehicle test and simulation capabilities, enhancement of our predictive technologies using the latest data analysis tools in conjunction with up-to-date data science methods.
  • Further develop the creativity and innovation capacity of the team with a focus on virtual tire development for tire wear performance.​
  • Cooperate with vehicle OEM’s, external companies and universities to shape our virtual tire development process for efficiency, quality and robustness.​
  • Oversee operation of lab and provide technicians daily direction as to current test requirements​.
  • Work with customers and lead engineer to prioritize and schedule requests for lab testing and analysis​.
  • Extract frictional energy data using a Matlab interface and analyze data​.
  • Develop knowledge and reports on wear prediction from lab frictional energy data and footprints​.
  • Support product development teams and provide recommendations for tire characteristics & tire design tuning to meet wear performance objectives. ​
  • Design experiments for technology development projects​.
  • Support automation software development by code testing, validation, and implementation​.
  • Oversee yearly machine calibration with external vendor and equipment calibrations with lab technicians​.
  • Maintain lab documentation on test and analysis procedures​.

 

 

Required Education and Experience

  • The candidate must have completed a Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, electrical, biomedical Engineering preferred)​.

    • A Master’s is an asset

  • Minimum 3-5 years of lab management experience in a scientific or engineering laboratory​.

  • Coursework in advanced mathematics, signal processing, and/or image processing​.

  • Advanced Matlab programming skills with the ability to use and modify Matlab GUI interfaces​.

  • Strong data analysis skills in Excel and Matlab​.

  • Proven ability to write professional laboratory reports​.

  • Proven experience to design new experiments in a laboratory environment​.

  • Detail oriented with precision in reoccurring tests​.

  • Experience with tire testing and prototype tire evaluation is an asset.

 

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of motors, motor controllers, and data acquisition systems​.

  • Knowledge of cameras and optics​.

  • Prior experience in designing image processing algorithms​.

  • Prior experience with either VBA, Python, C++, C#, or CUDA​.

  • Knowledge of functional system development approach (V-model).​

  • Proficient computer programming skills.​

  • Self-motivated individual.​

  • Team player with enthusiasm and initiative.​

  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
