The tire industry is highly regulated in many areas - Focusing on adherence to safety requirements (through type approval or self-certification). An example of a regulation (placed on the tire industry) would be the implementation of minimum rolling resistance, wet grip and noise limits in countries around the world. In response, countries have instituted tire labeling requirements for performance attributes (such as rolling resistance, wet grip, noise, snow performance and expected future requirements for abrasion resistance, worn wet grip and radio frequency identification [RFID]). Compliance with safety regulations, industry standards and advertising guidelines is the foundation for the successful defense of Goodyear products against product recalls, corporate penalties for regulatory non-compliance or against liability lawsuits for defective products.

The Chief Government Compliance and Standards Advisor is Goodyear’s representative in the international/domestic technical standards and regulatory community. This position works with other industry members (competitors) and standards committees to develop/implement both voluntary and mandatory standards for tires and to articulate/promote Goodyear's position during these activities. The incumbent is expected to take leadership roles in the different standards organizations and participate in task groups/subcommittees.

In addition, he/she is the expert (within the company) regarding global government and industry standards - Advising Tire Technology, Product Evaluation, Quality and management (when required).
