Material Scientist Leader, Asia Pacific

Primary Purpose of the position:

  • Based out of Goodyear's Shanghai office & will be mainly in charge of supporting open innovation projects & portfolio locally in Asia Pacific, starting with the focus mainly in China. The material scientist leader will conduct regular on-site technical visits to open innovation partners to closely follow up research projects, serve as technical liaison connecting with subject matter experts from Goodyear Innovation Centers, Akron, Luxembourg, DDCH as well as applied compounder in Pulandian development center, and provide regular technical updates to ensure project success
  • Responsible for understanding & updating the R&D landscape and tire material research trends in China (& Asia Pacific) in conjunction with global material science (GMS) material strategy which aligned with integration platforms and product roadmaps
  • Work with external science & technology program (ESTP) team to continue to enhance our open innovation relationship, expand our open innovation network and bring in new relevant ideas. 
  • Provide additional local functional support as needed

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide local technical & project support to AP open innovation projects and portfolio for AP and global applications, under the guidance of Innovation Lab Manager, Shanghai.  This includes:

- Work with GMS innovation center SMEs and open innovation parteners to complete statement of work, including design studies, testing protocals and technical deliverables. Identify most effective proof-of-concept methods and testing locations

- Regular onsite visits to open innovation entities to follow up projects and technical progress closely

  - Provide local compounding or tire build support activities for open innovation   projects    or ideas

  • Serve as liaison between open innovation entities and internal GMS principle investigators or scientists to communicate technical exchange and updates effectively

- Provide regular updates to GMS principle investigators, material science chiefs, managers and council leads

- Schedule regular technical and project exchange meetings between Goodyear GMS project teams and open innovation partners

- Report and resolve any communication and project challenges or issues between internal and external parties

 - Issue meeting minutes, reports and technical or project updates

  • Support material strategy roadmap updates. Understand and keep track of China (& Asia Pacific) material R&D landscape and trends. This includes:

- Attend key local technical conferences and issue reports to GMS

- Follow local research publications, government funding and research activities

 - Work with GMS councils to update material strategy that is aligned with integration platform and product roadmaps 

  • Participate in key global material functional meetings and provide functional support from innovation as needed
  • Work with ESTP members to enhance open innovation relationship, expand open innovation network in China (& Asia Pacific) and identify new relevant ideas related to material researches and applications.  

- Enhance open innovation relationship on active projects and current networks

- Expand new network on new key areas of interest of Goodyear and its material science organization

- Identify and bring new relevant ideas to GMS community

 

Requirements:

  • Master degree in material science, chemistry or chemical engineering related field, PhD (Material Science, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering) is preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in advanced material research in graduate or postgraduate academia institutes, organizations or industries
  • Experience in nanomaterials, polymer and rubber/tire research is preferred
  • Experience in leading multiple technical projects and cross-functional teams   
  • Experience in handling highly uncertain & ambiguous projects and leveraging external capabilities
  • Strong cross functional leadership skills
  • Strong communication skills and proficient in both English and Chinese. Proficient in Japanese or Korean will be a plus 
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and yet with the maturity in working in large corporation        
  • Project management skill is a plus
  • Ability to structure & run design experiments based on minimum viable resources or tools
